Objectives: This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of smoking and to explore the factors associated with smoking among elementary school students in a rural area.

Methods: A self-administered Questionnaire survey was carried out, from April to May 2004, for a total of 346 students of the fifth- and sixth grade in six elementary schools in a rural area in Korea. The current smoker was defined as the one who had smoked at least one cigarette within one month preceding the survey, the ever smoker was defined the one who had tried even a few puffs of a cigarette in his or her lifetime. The ever smokers were divided into those who had ever smoked a whole cigarette or more (whole cigarette smokers) and those who had tried just a few puffs during lifetime (experimenters).

Results: The percentage of ever smoker was 3 1.2% for males and 8.8% for females, and the prevalence of current smoking was 10.2% for males and 2.9% for females. The most common motivation for first smoking was ¡¯curiosity¡¯ (67.1%) followed by ¡¯seems to be funny¡¯ (11.4%), ¡¯suggestion from father and other adults¡¯(10.0%). The sources of first cigarette were ¡¯pick up in home¡¯(42.9%), ¡¯get from father and other adults¡¯(18.6%), and ¡¯get from friends or siblings¡¯ (17.1%). The situation of the biggest temptation for smoking was being stressed (25.0%) followed by ¡¯seeing others smoking¡¯(22.2%). ¡¯the pictures of smoking in mass media¡¯(18.1%), and ¡¯seeing tim cigarettes put around¡¯(12.5%). The parents, siblings, and other family members of ever smokers were more likely to smoke than those of never smokers. The percentage of having friends who smoke aiming whole cigarette smokers was 41.2%, which was significant]??higher than that of experimenters (15.1%), and that of never smokers (4.0%) (p<0.001).

Conclusions: The prevalence of smoking among elementary schoolers ti a rural area was considerably high. It is necessary to apply smoking prevention education 11) elementary school students intensively. The findings that one of the important motivations arid sources of cigarette were from father suggest that the smoking prevention education for parents is also very important.
